Why it matters
  • The rules are strict, and they are checked. Applicants get site visits and Home Affairs checks. Shops fronted for foreign operators are being flagged.1,2,3
  • Your municipal permit comes first. It is the slowest step.
  • There is no published closing date. Applications are first come, first served.3

As at 3 November 2026, the fund offers up to R100,000 a shop, and Sedfa (the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency, the state’s small business agency) takes applications online.4,5

How to apply

  1. Check the rules on the fund’s website: spazashopfund.co.za.6
  2. Gather your documents. The government’s SAnews step-by-step guide (23 July 2026) lists:4 - certified copy of your SA ID - business registration documents - proof of business address - proof the shop is trading - bank account confirmation - your municipal business permit
  3. Apply online at Sedfa’s portal: https://systemsnew.sefa.org.za/SMMEPortal/4
  4. Expect checks. A desktop review comes first, then a site visit. Officials confirm the shop exists, that you are the person running it, and your citizenship. Home Affairs checks are done before approval.3
  5. Do the training. Stock is only delivered after you have been trained on the point-of-sale device and in stock control, food handling and hygiene.7

Fund helpline (according to the fund’s website): 011 305 8080.6

Deadline: no closing date has been published; applications are first come, first served.3 We could not confirm whether the portal is still taking new applications. Nation Watch SA has asked Sedfa whether the portal is still open and will update this story once it responds.

Where to get help in the Vaal

The nearest Sedfa office listed is in Sasolburg. Sedfa’s office list shows no office in Sedibeng; the nearest is the Sasolburg/Metsimaholo branch, Eric Louw Street, Boiketlong Hall, Zamdela, tel 016 974 5500.8 Nation Watch SA has asked Sedfa whether it plans an office in the Vaal and will update this story once it responds.

Fronting: a warning

Fraud checks: in July 2026, the Public Protector reported cases of business fronting and mismatches between owners and operators.2,9 The department told Parliament that no payout had gone to a foreign-owned shop, and that suspicious applications were stopped before payment.2
