The IEC said a presiding officer in North West collapsed at her post on Monday and died.

In its statement on the first day of special voting, the commission said: “In North west Province, a Presiding officer collapsed at her post and has sadly passed on.” The IEC did not name her. Nation Watch SA is not naming her and will not speculate about the cause of death.

Why it matters
  • What changed: the IEC has reported the death of an election official on duty on Monday 2 November.
  • Who is affected: her family and colleagues, and election staff working this week.
  • What you can do: if someone falls ill at a voting station, alert the staff at once and call 112 from a mobile phone.

The same statement confirmed that a deputy presiding officer had been hit by a car in uKhahlamba district, in KwaZulu-Natal. The IEC gave no further details.

Special voting continues today, Tuesday 3 November, ahead of Wednesday’s election.
